Johannesburg - South Africans should not enjoy their freedom as long as Palestinians remain in conflict with Israel, EFF leader Julius Malema has said, Eyewitness News reported on Friday.

Ignoring the plight of Palestinians was equal to betraying former president Nelson Mandela's legacy, he reportedly told pro-Palestinian protesters during a march to the Israeli embassy in Pretoria.

He described Israel's actions in Gaza as a “crime against humanity”.

Two delegations appointed by President Jacob Zuma depart for the Middle East on Friday to call for a ceasefire.

Friday marked the 18th day of the deadliest violence in the area in five years. Agence France-Presse reported that more than 650

Palestinians and 31 Israelis had been killed so far.
