Durban - The secretary-general of the Young Communist League, Buti Manamela, has warned workers that EFF commander Julius Malema was desperate for power to escape his troubles with the law.

He said the contest in next week’s elections would only be between the ANC and DA, as smaller parties were confused.

Addressing a few hundred Cosatu members in Durban, Manamela claimed Malema was “high on drugs” when he drafted his party’s election manifesto.

He said he was talking from experience as he volunteered at drug rehabilitation centres in his spare time. He said young people on drugs felt like they were on cloud nine where nobody could touch them.

This, he said, was how the EFF felt when they wrote their manifesto which gave workers impossible promises.

He claimed EFF leaders wanted a lavish lifestyle and could not be trusted.

Malema, he claimed, went from one problem to another and hoped being in Parliament would save him from his troubles.

He also described Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union leader Joseph Mathunjwa, who had led platinum mining workers in a three-month strike, as a self-serving leader.

National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union president Mzwandile Makwayiba said workers should vote in their numbers to give the ANC a two-thirds majority.
