Johannesburg - Julius Malema has given the ANC’s Mangaung conference an ultimatum to immediately reinstate him as youth league president with full powers, or else face the consequences.

In a letter of demand written to ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe yesterday, Malema identified himself as a loyal member of the ANC, despite his expulsion in April. His suspended confidants – former league secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa and ex-spokesman Floyd Shivambu – also want to be reinstated in their positions.

“We believe that the ANC 53rd national conference should, after reading through the report attached, take these decisions to allow us to continue with our responsibilities immediately after the national conference,” the letter reads in part.

“We further write this letter to the national conference as a platform that should deliberate and look into our disciplinary hearing before we explore other options to seek fair hearing and justice.”

It’s unclear if Malema’s options include going to court, but he states in the letter that he had avoided the court action to first allow the conference to discuss the matter.

The national conference is the ANC’s final arbiter on organisational matters.

Malema said he was willing to be corrected and guided through principles of the ANC constitution, but he does not want to be silenced. - The Star
