Johannesburg - The slaughtering of eight cows will mark the entry of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) into South Africa's political landscape in Marikana, North West, on Saturday, the party has announced.
“We are slaughtering on Saturday and launch on Sunday,” EFF leader Julius Malema's spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said on Friday.
He said the ceremony would be at a hill at the Nkaneng informal settlement where police shot dead 34 people, many of them striking miners, last August.
“We will not rest until economic emancipation, a living wage and better working conditions have been achieved.... Marikana is a turning point. It exposed how the ANC was prepared to defend the capitalists,” Ndlozi said.
Malema, once an outspoken supporter of President Jacob Zuma and president of the African National Congress Youth League, formed the party after being expelled from the ANC.
The EFF received its registration certificate from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Monday.
According to its constitution, the EFF is a radical, left-wing, anti-capitalist, and anti-imperialist movement.
The party claims it provides clear and cogent alternatives to post-colonial economic systems, which in many countries had kept the oppressed under colonial domination.
The party advocates the expropriation of South Africa’s land without compensation, and the nationalisation of mines, banks, and other strategic sectors of the economy.
The EFF promises free quality education, healthcare, houses, and sanitation.
Ndlozi said Sunday's gathering had been approved by the Madibeng municipality, and the police had been informed.
