Expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema visited Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in hospital on Wednesday, the league said.

“Mama Winnie encouraged us to be strong and continue to fight during these trying times; she reminded us of the challenges faced by the ANCYL during the late 1940s...,” spokeswoman Magdalene Moonsamy said in a statement.

Madikizela-Mandela provided them with encouragement, saying that as leaders of the youth, they had the responsibility to build a prosperous future for the ANC and the nation.

“The ANCYL is always inspired by the words of encouragement, strength and resoluteness of Mama,” Moonsamy said.

Madikizela-Mandela is recovering at an undisclosed hospital after breaking her wrist in a fall on Thursday.

Malema led the league delegation which included deputy president Ronald Lamola, secretary general Sindiso Magaqa, his deputy Kenetswe Mosenogi and suspended spokesman Floyd Shivambu.

“The ANCYL wished Mama Winnie Mandela a speedy recovery and remain inspired by her fighting spirit and courage,” Moonsamy said. – Sapa
