Julius Malema will “remain president” of the ANC Youth League even if the ANC suspends him – and has no plans to vacate his office.

This was decided at the league’s lekgotla at the weekend, where it was argued that as the ANC had not elected Malema to his position, it did not have the power to fire him.

Malema was on Monday due to appear before the ANC’s national disciplinary committee, where his defence team were to argue that he deserves a sentence lighter than the effective five years’ suspension handed down in November.

But the ANC will also be arguing in aggravation of sentence, which means Malema runs the risk of a harsher sentence, or even expulsion.

Despite this defiant stance, the league is still trying to forge a political solution with the ANC.

A letter to the ANC’s leadership, in which league provincial chairpersons and secretaries ask for a meeting, was handed to party secretary-general Gwede Mantashe on Friday.

He was given the cold shoulder when he addressed the lekgotla, in contrast to the rapturous welcome for Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

In his closing remarks, Malema urged delegates to stay focused and continue their programmes of action to defend the league’s autonomy. - Political Bureau

He's being removed from the ANC movement, so how can he still be the youth president? Watch out for a new political party. The Asses for the Masses Party. AMP. or MUGS , Malema Ups Gwede Sorrowful party. Anyone think of something?

He may be an idiot but he has a point! The ANC did not elect him so how can they fire him. I see this one going to the CCMA with a big "unfair dismissal" payout to Julius.

@GHADDAFI AND MUGABE, your statements are unfounded chief, you have no proof of any of your allegations. The truth of the matter stands, uNjunju is suspended for completely different reasons to what you are arguing about, this is a matter about discipline, DISCIPLINE..now truthfully to behave the way he does is not becoming of any leader, Mandela fought his fight gracefully with dignity earning the respect of his supporters and enemies alike, can you say the same of your "man with a plan?"honestly his stance, which is actually that of the league's and not his own personally, are fair, there does need to be economic change etc, these are all true; but Julius is not the man to push for this, he cant be taken seriously he cant control himself, we need a better leader, we deserve a better leader, one who knows when to push and when a more diplomatic approach is needed, also a leader who can pass high school woodwork would be nice..

Why would he go ? for what good reason? Do see any problem with what he said and done? This current ANC leadership truely lost credibility, African countries continue to ignore and look us down. Look at what happened to dlamini-zuma trying to be AU boss, countries no longer listen and support us unlike during Mandela time, instead they respect the youth league that is why they wanted president of African youths to come from the biggest league in the world and Lungisa was elected. PLEASE MANGAUNG WE ARE TIRED OF PROMISES WITH MORE SEX SCANDALS ON NEWSPAPERS THEN SOME SPEECHES WITHOUT VISION. WE NEED A MAN WITH A PLAN IN AFRICA AND THAT IS JULIUS MALEMA. zuma IS USED BY THE WEST THAT IS WHY AFRICA IS REJECTING THE IDIOT.

This is great news. The more they fight each other within the ANC the better it is for the opposition. Long may they divide the ANC

I pity Malema and the ANCYL for deliberately confusing themselves, or is it that they just don't get it..? This is not about "autonomy of the YL", besides the ANCYL does not need to "defend the League's autonomy" as per their call at Lekgotla! They are the creation of the ANC together with the Women's League, subject to the rules, constitution of the mother body! Any conception to the contrary is false and they know this! The best for juju & co would have been to just submit now and serve their time, cos challenging it has a risk of even getting a harsher sentence!
