Pretoria - The Farlam Commission of Inquiry will take a recess and reconvene on January 6 next year, it said on Thursday.

Matthew Chaskalson SC is expected to continue cross-examining Brigadier Adriaan Calitz when the commission resumes, commission secretary Phuti Setati said in a statement.

Calitz was the commander in charge of the police on August 16, 2012, when 34 people were shot dead in a confrontation with the police near Lonmin's platinum mine near Marikana.

The commission will resume hearings at 9am that day in Centurion.
