Cape Town - Former president Nelson Mandela's “selfless devotion” should serve as an example to the country's public servants, the ACDP said on Thursday.

The African Christian Democratic Party wished Madiba a happy 95th birthday, and said it was encouraged to hear of his improving health.

In a statement, the party said Mandela's birthday should be a time to reflect on his rich legacy.

“Very rarely will one find a man who, after suffering the humiliation of over two decades in jail, will walk out of prison and 'turn the other cheek', by calling for peace and unity, when others called for war and mayhem,” it said.

The government should lead efforts to honour the global icon.

“The best way public office bearers, government officials, members of the private sector, and the public can honour the 95th birthday of Mr Mandela, is to adhere to the practices of good governance, the fight against crime and corruption, and ensure service delivery is effected to all sectors of society regardless of creed, colour, religious, or political affiliation,” the ACDP said. - Sapa
