Johannesburg - The DA wished former president Nelson Mandela a quick recovery on Thursday after he was admitted to hospital with a recurrence of a lung infection.

Spokesman Mmusi Maimane said the Democratic Alliance was saddened by the news that Mandela was ill.

“We hope and pray that he will have a speedy recovery,” he said.

Mandela was conscious when he was admitted to an undisclosed hospital just before midnight on Wednesday, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said earlier.

Maimane wished Mandela and his family and friends well.

“We know that he will be in the thoughts and prayers of many people around the world today... Get well soon Madiba!”

Maharaj said given Mandela's age and medical history, the doctors “acted with the greatest caution and responsibility” and made a decision to send him to hospital.

“He is receiving treatment to deal with the infection and to keep him comfortable.” - Sapa
