Johannesburg - A picture of former president Nelson Mandela, taken by German-born photographer Jurgen Schadeberg, will be auctioned off in Johannesburg on Tuesday, The Times reported.

The picture was taken in the former president's law office in 1952 and is valued between R30 000 and R40 000.

The picture would be included in a collection of contemporary art to be auctioned by Stephan Welz & Company. The auction house's managing director, Fred Scott, told the newspaper the picture was a part of history and art.

“Jurgen superbly captured Mandela in a tranquil pensive moment, making this photograph as much a work of art as it is a piece of history,” he was quoted as saying. The picture was taken after Mandela had teamed up with Oliver Tambo to open the country's first black legal practice.

Also featured in the auction would be works by William Kentridge, Conrad Botes, Robert Hodgins, Wayne Barker, Norman Catherine, Simon Stone, David Koloane, Karl Gietl and Kendall Geers. - Sapa
