The Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans wants Western Cape Health MEC Theuns Botha to apologise for allegedly disclosing “classified” information aboutNelson Mandela’s health-care arrangements.
Ministry spokesman Ndivhuwo Mabaya said Botha had blundered by revealing that Mandela was transported in an ambulance equipped with a mechanised lift.
“All the health logistics of former presidents are classified. In their quest to justify why kids from the Eastern Cape are in Cape Town, they have used Madiba,” said Mabaya.
Botha’s statement followed a week in which his party leader and premier, Helen Zille, was hauled over the coals for referring to pupils from the Eastern Cape who moved to the Western Cape as “educational refugees”.
“What Mr Botha is not saying is that the Eastern Cape Health Department later bought two of these ambulances,” said Mabaya.
He said it was unnecessary for the Western Cape government to invade Mandela’s privacy by involving his name in a political battle. That’s why the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Lindiwe Sisulu, had ordered that her department not co-operate with the Western Cape.
“We will no longer borrow anything from them… they want to play five cent politics,” said Mabaya.
