“All I know is that there was a planned visit to Mandela, but the deputy president decided to cancel and attend to state matters,” Motlanthe's spokesman Thabo Masebe told the newspaper.

According to the newspaper, Motlanthe had reportedly scheduled to visit Mandela, who was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on Saturday, and address a meeting of ANC members in Mthatha on Friday.

The Presidency said on Saturday afternoon that Mandela, 94, was admitted to hospital for “medical attention”.

President Jacob Zuma said in a statement that there was no cause for concern.

“As said before, former President Mandela will receive medical attention from time to time which is consistent with his age,” spokesman Mac Maharaj said.
