Johannesburg - Local government officials should be more accountable to communities, President Jacob Zuma said on Friday.
“The code of conduct for councillors dictates that they should be accountable to local communities and report back at least quarterly to their constituencies on council matters and municipal performance,” Zuma said in a speech prepared for delivery.
He addressed residents of Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, during a sitting there of members of Parliament's National Council of Provinces.
Zuma said the ministry of co-operative governance would work with MECs in all provinces to intensify oversight and ensure that councillors fulfilled their obligations to their communities.
“I also wish to emphasise that it is the duty of all public office-bearers to communicate with the public and not only councillors.
“Ministers, deputy ministers, MECs and mayors are also supposed to meet with the public regularly to report back on services and also to obtain feedback from citizens.” - Sapa
