Brits - African National Congress president Jacob Zuma received a hero’s welcome in Maboloka near Brits on Thursday.

Villagers stood along the street waved and ululated as bikers, dressed in yellow ANC T-shirts bearing former president Nelson Mandela’s face, passed.

Marshalls formed a guard of honour as the Zuma convoy passed, and a police helicopter hovered above.

At the tribal office where Zuma was to meet the local traditional leader, school children were pushing each other to have a glimpse of Zuma. He was accompanied by ANC North West chairperson and provincial Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

“There he is,” shouted one boy excitedly.

“I saw him, there at the back,” he said jumping.

Zuma was in Maboloka as part of the ANC election campaign in the Bojanala region of the North West.

He was expected to conduct a door-to-door campaign to interact with voters, and later address a mini rally in Letlhabile.

The ANC had sent its high ranking officials to campaign in North West, including deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa and deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte, who were in Rustenburg, while treasurer Zweli Mkhize was in Moretele municipality recently. ANC general secretary Gwede Mantashe was in Matlosana on Wednesday.

The ANC will wrap up its election campaign with a rally in Johannesburg on Sunday.
