Cape Town - Shocked Athlone filling station staff were counting their lucky stars this morning after they were left unharmed during a robbery and bombing attack on two teller machines outside the building.
An unknown number of men, some armed with automatic assault rifles, brazenly stormed a BP filling station in Athlone Industria early this morning, held up the staff inside the 24-hour shop and bombed the ATMs, station manager Kyle Manus confirmed on Wednesday.
“It happened about 2.40 this morning. Fortunately, none of our people were injured,” Manus said.
The service station belongs to Manus’s father, Harold.
“They blew up both the ATMs attached to our building and they managed to breach them.
“I don’t yet know how much they got away with.
“According to the staff, the robbers were armed with AK47s,” Manus said.
