Johannesburg - Ten children were injured when the minibus taxi they were travelling in veered off the road and drove down an embankment. The accident happened on Harley Road in Randburg around midday on Thursday.

According to the JMPD’s superintendent Edna Mamonyane, the driver notified the JMPD that the reason for the accident was that his brakes failed. “The driver alleges that after his brakes failed, he swerved onto the pavement and he collided with a fence,” Mamonyane said. It is during this time that it is believed that he lost control of the vehicle and it drove down an embankment injuring the children aged between six and 10.

“The officer then decided to discontinue the vehicle until it is tested for road worthiness again,” she added.

According to an ER24 statement, paramedics found several children walking around on the scene while a few others were found seated under a tree. The children were then treated for the minor injuries.

They were also transported to hospital for further observation. It is unclear at this stage where they were travelling from. The driver did not sustain major injuries.

A case of reckless and negligent driving will be opened.
