Middelburg - Three people have been killed and more than 10 others injured in a multi-vehicle collision in Middelburg in Mpumalanga, ER24 reported on Friday.

ER24 spokesperson Annine Siddall said the accident occurred on the R555 and Stoffberg road in Middelburg on Friday afternoon.

Siddall said that at the time of their arrival, ER24 paramedics found more than 10 patients had sustained moderate to serious injuries in the collision.

"Two female patients between the ages of 40-50 years were resuscitated, but nothing more could be done to help them and they were declared dead on the scene," Siddall said. "An elderly male patient was also declared dead on the scene."

Patients were transported to nearby hospitals for further medical care and one was airlifted to hospital by other emergency services.

A burnt out taxi was found on scene, but details around the incident were still unclear and local authorities were on the scene to investigate.

A memorial service for 18 people – mostly miners – killed in a horror crash in the province on Tuesday was due to take place on Friday at the local stadium at Emthonjeni Township in Machadodorp.

A truck was involved in a collision with two mini buses transporting mine workers to work on Tuesday on the R541 road between Badplaas and Machadodorp. Sixteen people died at the scene, while two more were certified dead at the Belfast Hospital.
