London - Nuclear waste from Hitler’s secret atom bomb programme has been found in an old salt mine near Hanover, experts say.

More than 126,000 barrels of nuclear material lie rotting 2,000ft below ground.

The irradiated remains of nuclear scientists who worked on the Nazi programme are also rumoured to be there.

A statement by a boss of the Asse II nuclear fuel dump, just discovered in an archive, described how in 1967 “our association sank radioactive wastes from the last war, uranium waste, from the preparation of the German atom bomb”.

The German “uranium project” began in earnest shortly after the invasion of Poland in 1939.

Historians had believed the programme was nowhere near advanced enough to have produced nuclear waste in any quantities, but US expert Mark Walker said: “It isn’t safe to say they fell short of enriching enough uranium for a bomb.” - Daily Mail
