A head-on collision between a minibus and small truck killed 13 people and injured 12 in northeastern Turkey on Saturday, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The accident happened on the outskirts of the town of Agri, near the border with Iran.

The minibus swerved out of control when one of its tyres exploded and slammed into the truck coming in the opposite direction, the Agri governor's press service said.

The passengers on the minibus were locals from Agri returning home for the start of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, after working in Istanbul, in northwest Turkey, according to the news channel NTV. - Sapa-AFP
