At least 17 people were killed and 28 injured when a bus came off the road in eastern China early Wednesday, a news report said.

The sleeper bus overturned on a viaduct in heavy rain at 2 am (1800 Tuesday GMT) before plunging around 50 metres in the coastal county of Xiapu, Fujian county, news agency Xinhua reported.

Three people were hospitalized with serious injuries, an official was quoted by the report as saying. - Sapa-dpa
