Santiago - A strong earthquake jolted northern Chile Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Chile's seismology centre initially measured the quake at 6.1 on the Richter scale, while the US Geological Survey measured it at 6.2.

The quake hit at 1726 GMT near the city of Chanaral in Chile's north-central Atacama region, about 800 kilometres north of the capital Santiago, the Chilean emergency authority Onemi said.

The greatest shaking was reported in the towns of Copiapo and Tierra Amarilla, Onemi said.

Authorities said no injuries or damage were reported, and there was no risk of a tsunami along Chile's long Pacific coast.
