San Juan - Police in Puerto Rico say an infant has died after apparently being left in a car for several hours.

A statement from police in the coastal Puerto Rican town of Arecibo says the father left the six-month-old boy outside a car dealership where he had a meeting.

The 31-year-old father returned to his car at lunchtime and realised the baby was still strapped into his car seat.

It wasn't immediately clear how long the child had been left alone in the car.

Paramedics were unable to revive the boy on Wednesday and he was declared dead at a local hospital.

Authorities were still trying to determine if the father would face charges. - Sapa-AP
