Jakarta - Indonesian police said on Thursday they had arrested seven women involved in an alleged child trafficking ring suspected of selling dozens of babies since the 1990s, some of them in Singapore.
“We arrested seven women involved in buying and selling babies in early January in West Jakarta,” city police spokesman Rikwanto told AFP.
“They included midwives and we think there are more people involved. Based on interrogations, we believe this ring has been operating since the 90s.”
Rikwanto, who goes by one name, said that police suspected babies plucked from Indonesian hospitals and given false identities were listed on the manifests of several flights to Singapore and were likely being sold there.
“Our investigation has found that the women would buy the babies from poor mothers, promising financial incentives and telling them the babies would live better lives with wealthier families,” he said.
The suspects bought the babies for between $1 500 and $2 000 depending on their “beauty and health condition” and sold them for up to $8 250, with boys fetching higher prices, Rikwanto said.
Police last month investigated an advertisement offering two babies for sale at $1 000 each on the popular auction and shopping website Tokobagus.com. Rikwanto said the two investigations were not connected. - AFP
