Brussels - A Belgian court said Tuesday it would rule at the end of the month on whether to free Michelle Martin, the ex-wife and accomplice of notorious paedophile killer Marc Dutroux.

The court in Mons last year refused to free Martin, 52, who was convicted in 2004 of helping Dutroux but has been in prison since the case was uncovered in 1996.

She has served more than half of her 30-year sentence and last year was granted parole, but the court blocked the move because it deemed as unacceptable plans to reintegrate her into society.

The court is weighing a new proposal, details of which were not released, and will rule on this July 31, according to Belgian news agency Belga.

Dutroux was jailed for life in June 2004 for the kidnap and rape in the 1990s of six young and teenaged girls, four of whom died.

Martin was found guilty of helping Dutroux hold his victims prisoner, and of complicity in the deaths of two eight-year-olds. - Sapa-AFP
