Damascus, Syria - Activists and state media in Syria say a suicide car bombing near a primary school in a Shi’a town has killed at least five people.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a suicide bomber detonated the explosives-laden car outside the school in Umm al-Amed.

An official from the governor's office of the central province of Homs also confirmed the incident. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't allowed to speak to journalists.

The Observatory said at least five people were killed. The Syrian official said 10 people were killed, including five students. It wasn't possible to immediately reconcile the conflicting death tolls.

Syria's civil war has become increasingly sectarian, with Shi’as largely support President Bashar Assad in his fight against mainly Sunni rebels.
