La Paz - Bolivian President Evo Morales and Charge d’Affaires of the US embassy in La Paz Peter Brennan expressed on Tuesday their desire to improve bilateral ties.

The two met at Quemado Palace, Bolivian president’s official residence, where they discussed various topics concerning bilateral relations, including commerce, environment and legal issues.

Morales said the thaw in the Bolivian-US ties happened at the initiative of the US government, which had in the past asked Bolivia to cut off ties with Cuba and Iran.

La Paz and Washington have had a complex relationship since US ambassador Philip Goldberg was expelled from Bolivia in September 2008. Since then, Bolivia has also kicked out all US Drug Enforcement Administration agents and operatives from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

In November 2011, the two countries signed a framework agreement to reestablish diplomatic relations, but have achieved little progress since.
