Johannesburg - As it marked the international day against nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction on Wednesday, the UN reported its finding that both the Syrian air force and Islamic State (IS) had used toxic chemicals as weapons in Syria, often targeting civilians.
A report issued on Tuesday by a panel mandated by the UN Security Council to identify responsible parties found “sufficient evidence” in three cases of chemical weapons use: two chlorine gas attacks on civilians by the Syrian air force and one using ‘sulphur-mustard’ gas by the terrorist group IS, or Daesh as it is known in Arabic, in Syria between 2014 and 2015.
The panel had examined nine cases of previously documented chemical weapons use in the Syrian Arab Republic.
