Cancel Israel trip, Tutu tells performers

IOL news Desmond Tutu

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has asked the Cape Town Opera to cancel a planned trip to Israel, saying it would be inappropriate and unconscionable.

“Just as we said during apartheid that it was inappropriate for international artists to perform in South Africa in a society founded on discriminatory laws and racial exclusivity, so it would be wrong for Cape Town Opera to perform in Israel,” Tutu said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Cape Town Opera should postpone its proposed tour next month until both Israeli and Palestinian opera lovers of the region have equal opportunity and unfettered access to attend performances.

“Only the thickest-skinned South Africans would be comfortable performing before an audience that excluded residents living, for example, in an occupied West Bank village 30 minutes from Tel Aviv, who would not be allowed to travel to Tel Aviv, while including his Jewish neighbours from an illegal settlement on occupied Palestinian territory.”

Tutu said the Tel Aviv Opera House was state sponsored, and by “luring” international artists to perform there, “ it advances Israel's fallacious claim to being a civilised democracy”.

He said millions of people were denied the rights to educational and cultural opportunities in Israel every day.

“In South Africa, people opposed apartheid in many different ways. Those of us who believed in peaceful means of forcing change, received enormous assistance from our friends abroad in isolating the apartheid state: economically, politically, socially and culturally.

“Please, fine singers of the Cape Town Opera: Much as it offers you opportunities to travel abroad and show the world what we can do, listen to your conscience. God loves Jews and Muslims equally. To perform Porgy and Bess, with its universal message of non-discrimination, in the present state of Israel, is unconscionable,” said Tutu. - Sapa

It amazes me how retarded some people are....Gee this conflict over Jerusalem has been fought for thousands of years....not just since Israel took back their Holy land. The crusades were fought over the same land and just cause the Arabs were there LAST doesnt mean they own it...Jesus was born there and he was a Jew so I back the Jewish people and think they must fight to keep it and Tutu must take another pill and go back to sleep.

Yo! Desmond and all the other pea brains on these threads, as you are so upset about the CT Opera visiting Israel you should probably complain about the Darfurian refugees escaping an African genocide and fleeing to Israel. The only country in Africa [including South Africa] and the Middle East that takes them in and provides them with a new life!!...The Despotism and Kleptocracy that pervades from Cape to Cairo does not give you the right to judge others! ..LOL at you hypocrites.!

Israel is a very small country in a very large region. It appears to me that if they were granted their place in the sun the region would be peaceful. Most of the original settlers had just escaped persecution in Europe and wanted nothing more than a piece of land where they would not be under threat. Does anyone really think that these refugees wanted to enter into a war with an over-whelming majority of national armies who wanted to eliminate their small state in 1948 (or 67 or 73)? No country whose existence is continuously threatened and where organisations have clauses in their charters calling for the elimination of that country, is going to be at ease. These factors are the underlying causes of Israel's defensiveness and give rise to their over-reactions to perceived threats.

Desmond Tutu, anti semitic, anti Zionist, Xenophobic racist!. Give it up already Desmond, your holier then thou diatribe coming from the Rainbow Nation is a joke, the Xenophobic killing of immigrants that occur in this country are far worse then any thing that has taken place in Israel. Every single citizen has the freedom to attend the opera or anything else for that matter. The anti semitic garbage on these threads is symptomatic of your racism Desmond and unfortunately the hate that emanated from the Apartheid days and still predominates in the so called 'New South Africa'.

Well said Mr Tutu. It`s not the Jews who are at fault, it`s the zionist jews who are at fault. They have no morals and their values are non-existent, the only thing they value is corruption. Down with Israel.

OK history lesson..does anyone know why the arabs are at war with Israel? It all started in 1936-15 April to be specific, (this besides the wailing wall protests in 1929, which were religious) The Arabs thought they could take Israel by force, and got their asses kicked.Instead of negotiating they chose to fight, and lost a lot of face and ground against the Jewsbrits because of this approach. The Brits actually tried to broker a peace deal, but the Arab leader at the time boycotted the talks and they ramped up the attacks against Jews in 1935 (Jaffa riots..)and jews were attacked country wide.In the interim, the Jews boycotted Arab products and labour and a mass of Jews arrived to fill these needs. To this day the Arabs prefer antagonism over negotiation. The years of defense by the Jews have hardened them and they will never give up their fight against the Arabs.Bear in mind too, there are atrocities on both sides, the Israeli's are just better at it than the Arabs. Bottom line is,the Arabs could have shared in Israel, but chose to fight and not accept the Jews. The Jews buuilt a powerful country, transforming desert into paradise, and that my friends is why they wont let go now. Would you give up your country to people who have done nothing but war with you for over 80 years, and not contributed to building the country at all? Read up on the rest yourselves...its very interesting...

It is time that both Jews and Palestinians stopped this Two Nation nonsense. Palestine was one country with Jews, Moslems and Christians living side by side until the British encouraged the 'Israel'idea both pre and post war. The only obvious solution now is the one that South Africa took: One Nation! Both Jews and Palestinians might be surprised to find out how well they get on if forced to live together in the same country! The Two Nation idea will no more work in PalestineIsrael than it would have done in South Africa.

Tutu, bored during retirement. Why does he even get media attention? He was nothing, and is still nothing. The ANC shut him up once before when he dared to challenge them, now he garners attention by attacking Israel, who have been facing adversity since the Brits established their country. Its not the Israel's faults, they are merely defending their lives against the Arab terrorists who just want them all dead.Anyway, one reader said Tutu would be better advised concentrating onnstuff at home. How about taking up the mantle of fighting corruption amongst the ANC, the worst thieving leaders we have ever had.

For Israel to exist,2 thirds of a nation had to become refugees!! The state of Israel came into existence when there was no place for them 2 go after the holocaust. Maybe some of u need to do your homework bcoz it seems u think Israel has always been on the map...Viva Tutu

The man is 100% correct. Get your facts straight guys, most of your comments are ignorant. I`ve been there and it aint right what Israel is doing to the Arabs and Ethiopian Jews who were asked to settle there. I`m sure most of you have just seen the good parts of Israel just like in the apartheid era when you ignored whats happening in the townships. People supporting Israel are the same people who supported apartheid. Boycott Israel
