Islamabad -

Police in central Pakistan arrested the second of two brothers previously imprisoned in connection with cannibalism, after they allegedly ate an infant, officials said on Tuesday.

Farman Ali, 37, was arrested in an overnight raid in Darya Khan in Punjab province, said police official Ameer Abdullah.

Police arrested the older brother, Muhammad Arif, 40, on Monday after neighbours complained of a foul smell coming from their house and recovered the skull of an infant.

Arif admitted during interrogation they had stolen the baby's body from a nearby graveyard and eaten the flesh, police official Zafar Iqbal said.

Abdullah said the brothers would be taken to an anti-terrorism court for indictment.

Originally arrested in April 2011 for stealing and eating the corpse of a cancer victim, in a case which shocked Pakistan, they were given a two-year term and released from jail last year.

The brothers were convicted of desecrating graves because Pakistan does not specifically outlaw cannibalism.

The incident triggered anger across the country and a mob demolished the brothers' house at the time. - Sapa-dpa
