Miami - The daughter of former Cuban ruler Fidel Castro has gone back to Havana to visit her seriously ill mother, the Miami Herald reported on Wednesday.

Alina Fernandez's visit to the Caribbean Island is the first since she escaped in 1993 using a false passport and a disguise, the paper reported.

The 58-year-old journalist is an outspoken critic of the communist regime that has ruled the country for more than 50 years. Her visit is presumed to have been approved by the Cuban regime.

Fernandez moved to Miami after escaping Cuba, joining other anti-Castro Cuban exiles who live there.

Fernandez says she has no contact with Fidel Castro, who is her father, though her parents were not married when she was born in 1956.

Prior to leaving Cuba she had been a member of the revolutionary 26th of July Movement led by Castro that overthrew the regime of Fulgencio Batista in Cuba (1959).
