Santiago, Chile -

The government says the latest of numerous student protests that have swept Chile for more than a year was the most violent to date.

A report by Interior Undersecretary Rodrigo Ubilla says 472 demonstrators were detained in Thursday's protest by tens of thousands of high school and college students who flooded the streets of the capital of Santiago and other cities to demand education reforms.

Friday's report says 36 police officers were injured in the protest.

Ubilla lashed out at student movement leader Gabriel Boric for allegedly calling on students to express their anger.

Boric told radio Biobio he had called for a “peaceful march.”

Santiago's march was marred by isolated incidences of rock-throwing. Police responded with water cannons and tear gas. - Sapa-AP
