Canoe fraudster John Darwin has been ordered to pay back £40 000 from the insurance money he obtained when he faked his death.

The 63-year-old, who was jailed for six years for swindling £679 000, had earlier been asked to pay back £121. But now Teesside Crown Court has ruled he must pay back £40 000 after two of his pensions matured.

Darwin, of Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool, was declared dead in 2003 after apparently drowning on a canoe trip. He then fled to Panama with his wife, leaving their two sons to believe he was not alive. - Daily Mail
