Bangkok -

Police arrested 172 suspects on drug charges in one day in northern Thailand, local media reported on Wednesday.

Officials said they also confiscated more than 3 million dollars worth of methamphetamine in the northern city of Chiang Saen.

Police and soldiers have been cracking down on illegal drugs and money laundering in the northern provinces, according to Channel Three television channel.

The border areas where northern Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet, popularly known as the Golden Triangle, is one of the most active drug producing and trafficking areas in the world.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the region is the second-largest area in the world in terms of opium cultivation and processing. In recent years, many traffickers have focused on methamphetamines that can be produced in small, concealed labs.
