A rampaging elephant has killed an elderly man after escaping from a circus.
The animal broke out of her enclosure at a village near Paris and attacked an 84-year-old man playing petanque, a form of the French ball game boules.
The two-ton beast, called Tanya, caused “terrible injuries” when she trampled the pensioner and beat him with her trunk. He died later in hospital.
Tanya was said to have been ‘angry and upset’ after a show in Lizy-sur-Ourcq on Sunday and used a tarpaulin to cover an electric fence before smashing through two barriers. Last night she was back in captivity.
