Jerusalem - Israel's state attorney Sunday submitted an indictment against former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman to the Magistrates Court in Jerusalem, Israel Radio reported.
The indictment accuses Lieberman of fraud and breach of trust because, it is alleged, in 2009, Lieberman had an acquaintance appointed as ambassador to Latvia, after the latter supplied him with classified information about a police investigation against him.
A new - and main - witness against Lieberman will be Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, who chairs the committee which appointed the ambassador.
Lieberman resigned earlier this month when the attorney general announced, after studying the evidence collected in the years-long investigation, that Lieberman should stand trial.
However, Lieberman is still number 2 on the joint list of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling Likud party and his own ultra-nationalist Israel Beiteinu, which are running together in January 22 elections.
The attorney general had closed another case against Lieberman, without charges, which investigated suspicions of money laundering. - Sapa-dpa
