A Vietnamese man who had a 90-kilogram tumour removed from his right leg returned home on Tuesday three months after the operation.

“I am very happy because now I can stand up and walk with my remaining leg,” Nguyen Duy Hai told dpa by phone en route home. “I will learn to get a job repairing cellular phones to make a living.”

The 32-year-old man from the central Vietnam city of Da Lat had the tumour growing his right leg for more than 30 years, despite an amputation at the knee 14 years ago.

The metre-wide tumour twisted Hai's spine and pelvis, and caused problems with his breathing and circulation.

He underwent surgery at France-Vietnam hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. The 10-hour procedure was broadcast live by a US-based television channel. - Sapa-dpa
