Mexico City -

Police have arrested a prominent leader of the deadly Gulf drug cartel in Mexico, police said on Sunday.

David Rosales Guzman, alias “El Comandante Diablo” (Commander Devil), was arrested on Saturday in the northern industrial city of Monterrey, the Public Safety Office said in a statement.

Rosales Guzman was known for having some of his victims hung from bridges in busy parts of cities, and was linked to 19 murders in August as well as kidnappings and extortion.

President Felipe Calderon launched an anti-drug offensive in 2006, deploying Mexican troops and police. More than 50 000 people have since died in the brutal drug war. - Sapa-AFP
