The father of Anders Breivik declared on Monday that he wished his son had killed himself.

Former diplomat Jens Breivik, 76, said he was “completely bereft” and would never speak to his son again.

“I think that the last thing he should have done, rather than to kill so many people, he should have taken his own life,” he said at his isolated villa in rural France, where he and his wife are under armed guard.

“I still do not understand how such things could happen. It is not a normal person who does something like that.”

The 76-year-old, who has been estranged from his son since 1995, had been expected to travel to his native Norway on Monday, but decided against it. He told a Norwegian television station: “I don’t feel like his father.

“How could he just stand there and kill so many innocent people and just seem to think that what he did was okay? I will have to live with this shame for the rest of my life. People will always link me with him.”

Asked what he would say to his son if he got the chance to talk to him again, Mr Breivik said: “I don’t know. He must live in another world - I do not think he would understand.” - Daily Mail
