The driver of a hearse in central Sri Lanka was arrested after letting a corpse he was transporting slip off the back of his vehicle, a local newspaper said on Friday.
Police confirmed that the driver, who was delivering the body for a funeral, was to be charged with causing disrespect to a dead person.
According to the local Lankadeepa newspaper, the rear door of the vehicle accidentally opened, allowing the coffin and corpse to fall off in the town of Kandy, about 120 kilometres east of the capital Colombo.
The newspaper said the coffin ended up a few hundred metres away from the body.
The driver arrived at the house where he was expected to deliver the body only to find it was missing, the newspaper said.
He was subsequently arrested.
“Under our laws there is provision to charge such a person for causing disrespect to a dead person,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Gamini Dissanayake said. - Sapa-dpa
