Rome - Italian police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States launched a joint swoop on a Cosa Nostra clan based in Sicily on Wednesday, arresting 20 people in Palermo, New York and Miami.

Italian police said the operation was the result of two years of investigations, with arrest warrants issued on charges of attempted murder, drug trafficking, association with the Mafia, extorsion and money laundering.

Six arrests were carried out in the United States and the rest were in Italy, police added.
