Berlin - German police freed a kidnapped French girl, 15, on Friday from the boot of a car after a high-speed car chase.

Police and prosecutors in Offenburg, near the French border, said they were holding a man who has a criminal record on suspicion of kidnapping her.

The chase began when a man alerted police that somebody had broken into his own car. The suspect's car drove away at high speed. During the chase it crashed and the suspect fled on foot.

Police did not realise the girl was in the trunk until they returned to the crash scene.

They said the girl, who comes from southern France, was unharmed. - Sapa-dpa
