Laura Bush in Israel for a whirlwind tour
Tel Aviv - American First Lady Laura Bush arrived here on Sunday for a one-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories as part of a six-day regional tour, an AFP correspondent said.
During the whirlwind visit, Laura Bush was expected to meet with the wife of Israeli President Moshe Katsav before paying a visit to the Wailing Wall and the Al-Aqsa mosque compound and Jerusalem's Old City.
The Wailing Wall, the last remnant of the Second Temple which was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD, is the holiest site in Judaism and backs onto the mosque compound, which is the third most sacred spot in Islam.
The wife of US President George Bush was also expected to visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial museum before heading to Jericho in the southern West Bank where she would meet with top Palestinian officials.
Bush arrived in Israel following a two-day visit to Jordan which saw her speaking at a World Economic Forum meeting on the shores of the Dead Sea. She was expected to leave the region late Sunday en route for Egypt.
