Two lawmakers from Mexico's leftist Democratic Revolution Party have submitted a proposal to legalise marijuana, just days after similar measures were approved in two US states.
A recent poll suggests most Mexicans oppose the idea.
Mexico has already decriminalised the possession of small amounts of marijuana. But the proposal submitted on Thursday to the lower house of Congress would regulate legal production and distribution of marijuana, with the aim of removing a source of illegal revenue for Mexico's drug cartels.
Legislators in Uruguay have submitted a similar measure.
The Parametria polling firm says an August poll of 500 Mexicans showed 86 percent opposed legalising the drug. The poll had a margin of error of 4.4 percent. - Sapa-AP
