Mumbai - A wild leopard has been seen prowling the campus of a university on the outskirts of India's largest city.

Authorities in Mumbai have cordoned off the area and are searching for the big cat.

A spokeswoman for the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay said a staff member saw the leopard on Wednesday morning near a laboratory and informed school officials.

Rashmi Uday Kumar said local forestry officials cordoned off the area to search for the animal. They had not found it by Wednesday afternoon.

Kumar said classes in all other parts of the 225-hectare campus continued normally.

The institute lies on the city's outskirts next to Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Kumar said it was the second time in a few years a leopard strayed from the wildlife preserve onto campus. - Sapa-AP
