A Malaysian court on Tuesday sentenced an Indonesian maid to 20 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to the attempted murder and physical abuse of her employer's four-month-old son.
The maid, named only as Yuliana, received 15 years imprisonment for attempted murder and another five years for physical abuse from Kuantan Session Court.
Judge Mohd Azhar Othman said the harsh sentence was intended as a deterrent and a lesson not only to the maid but also to the public.
Yuliana, 24, was caught in a surveillance camera abusing the boy at the house of her employer in Kuantan town in the state of Pahang about 195 kilometres north-east of Kuala Lumpur, on February 15.
In a closed-circuit TV recording broadcast on national television late Monday, the maid was seen tossing the boy in the air and then throwing him repeatedly on the floor. - Sapa-dpa
