Japanese police arrested a 45-year-old man on charges of taking a bus driver and passengers hostage with scissors on Monday in south-western Japan, reports said.

No one was injured in the incident on the island of Kyushu, the Kyodo News agency reported.

The unemployed man reportedly demanded a meeting with his relatives in the city.

He told police in Miyazaki prefecture that he wanted to die and thought he would be arrested if he caused a big problem, Kyodo said.

He reportedly called local police on Sunday morning, asking them what he should do in order to be arrested. - Sapa-dpa
