A man in Italy was treated in hospital for serious head injuries on Sunday after a 24-year-old brandished a baseball bat and started lunging at people in the streets of Torvaianica, shouting: “I hate politicians to death.”
The attack in the coastal town about 35km south of Rome came as Italy was voting for European Parliament elections.
Before police intervened, five other people were hit by the attacker, the ANSA news agency said.
When officers apprehended him, saving him from an angry mob, the man continued shouting abuse against politicians.
Authorities were said to be checking whether the attacker had acted under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
He reportedly did not have any history of psychological disorders. - Sapa-dpa
