New Delhi - The wife of an Indian minister who was found dead in a Delhi hotel room died of a drug overdose, according to an autopsy, media reports said on Tuesday.
A magistrate investigating the incident said the autopsy found traces of the anti-depressant Alprazolam in the body of Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of Shashi Tharoor, federal junior minister for human resource development, NDTV news channel reported.
No traces of alcohol were reported to have been found, according to the autopsy, which was handed over to sub-divisional magistrate Alok Sharma on Monday.
Pushkar was found dead in a hotel room on Friday. She had sent messages over Twitter on Wednesday that appeared to indicate her husband had an affair with a Pakistani journalist.
The couple, who had been married since 2010, later said that they were happily married and that the controversy had been caused by the unauthorised use of their Twitter accounts.
Tharoor said that he was horrified by the “reckless speculation” in the media about his wife's death, and wanted a swift inquiry so that the truth could come out. Sharma instructed the police to find out what had caused the drug overdose.
