Rio de Janeiro -

A 27-year-old Brazilian reality TV star, who was the runner-up in a best-buttocks competition, has been admitted to hospital with complications from a cosmetic procedure to enlarge her thighs.

The Conceicao Hospital Group in the southern city of Porto Alegre said on Wednesday that Andressa Urach had an infection in her thighs after receiving under-skin injections of a substance to “increase volume” in her upper legs.

Urach was hospitalised on Monday evening. Earlier, she had been sedated. But the group said in a statement on Wednesday that she later woke up and was taken off a respirator.

She underwent two procedures at the hospital to drain a substance called aquagel that is used in Brazil as an alternative to cosmetic implants.

Urach came second in Brazil's 2012 “Miss Bumbum” contest, which celebrates shapely bottoms.
