Rome - Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti resigned on Friday, bringing to an end a technocrat government brought in to save Italy from the eurozone debt crisis, and triggering early elections.

Monti said at his last cabinet meeting that he was handing in his resignation to President Giorgio Napolitano, the government said in a statement. - Sapa-AFP
